“Participation in physical activity and play makes our lives go better, not just longer” Scott Kretchmar

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils: develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities; are physically active for sustained periods of time; engage in competitive sports and activities and to lead healthy, active lives. (National Curriculum). At Princess Frederica, we aim for all children to leave primary school having a positive experience of physical education, feel comfortable and confident to have a go at any activity and have a grasp on basic skills as they transition to secondary school.

“The game is never more important than the people you play with.”   Debra Demaline Maxted

PE is led by our sports specialist, Mr Chantler, who teaches PE across the school while also overseeing clubs and working closely with the local borough for new opportunities.

As a voluntary aided primary school, we receive funding (through the sports premium) to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport that we offer. We use the sports premium to:

  • develop or add to the PE and sport activities that Princess Frederica already offers.
  • make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.

Please see the attached document below on how we are spending our funding allocation for this academic year.

Sports Competitions 2024-25

The School sports competitions and events that are in the calendar are those that the school intend to participate in. There may be changes throughout the year as events are added or cancelled.

We aim to give all year groups an event to attend within the school year, although this isn’t always possible.

Some important information to note when different events come around.

If an event requires transport by our school mini-bus, (Kingsbury High School) then we are restricted to 14 children for that event. (seats on the bus) In those situations Mr Chantler will select 7 girls and 7 boys for the competitions.

An event or competition closer to school, Willesden Sports Centre for example, then more children can be chosen as the venue is within walking distance.

We follow the rules of all events set out by the organisers, the main one being that schools can only bring a certain number of children to that event to form the team. Where known, this is indicated on the calendar in brackets.

When a competition or event is coming up on the calendar, work is done with the year group it applies to in their PE lessons, to help them prepare and for Mr Chantler to select the strongest team, with the hope of the team achieving well.

Children are selected not only on their skills and abilities for the competition, but also their work, effort and behaviour in PE lessons. The children chosen know they are going to these events to represent our school, be excellent ambassadors for the school and show the high level of respect and sportsmanship we expect as a school.

Football Teams

The school has a boy’s football club and a girl’s football club who are both in the Brent leagues. Matches are played against other primary schools in Brent throughout the year. Both groups train on a Monday evening (boys) and a Tuesday evening (girls) in preparation for those matches. The games are 7-a-side and a squad of 9 as a minimum is selected from each group for the matches. The children selected are again chosen using the criteria set out above and their commitment to the clubs after school on their training days.
